RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

Well, it did last a long time relative to how these threads go. But it sure has gone downhill while I was out tracking with my dog, this morning.
Time to close.

RE: Email a Post

Does anyone know if a topic or a specific post can be emailed? Thanks
You email a thread, as opposed to to a single post.
Click on the Print Topic link that you will find at the top and bottom of each page of a thread.
http://i35.tinypic.com/2iuxmyr.jpg
Use the File menu in the Print Preview window to select
Send --> Page by E-mail...
http://i34.tinypic.com/iz80wp.jpg
The email window will open. Put in the address(es) and click on send.
Pictures signatures will not be sent. Pictures in the body of posts will be sent. How they are viewed will depend on the email client of the recipient.

RE: Software question using Vista

Don't let the anti-Vista wienies scare you off; Vista is fine. Much better than XP.
Agreed!
Those that whine about VISTA are most always those users with very little computer savvy lets call it. At this point in time I would not even consider owning a PC with XP on it.
Now there's a concept for you. Should an operating system written for about 90% of the world's computers be written for the "computer savvy" or should it be something that doesn't frustrate less knowledgeable users?
I believe the bad ... well feeling from users and press from pundits comes from the reality that first impressions are important. Microsoft released Vista before Vista and Microsoft's partners were ready. Add that to the 'Vista Capable' debacle, and the first impressions were not too good.

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

Many MacIntel users also have Windows XP or Vista installed on Intel Macs that are not counted for Windows market share. BTW Microsoft had record profit in the last quarter (July-Sep 2008) of $4.3 billion vs only $1.14 billion for Apple. Vista is a cash cow for Microsoft.
Yes, Microsoft is a big company raking in the cash. But, wait. I've been talking about misleading numbers -- maybe there is another way to look at those numbers.
For the last reported quarter, Microsoft's earnings per diluted share was $0.48. Apple's earnings per diluted share was $1.26.
No, that doesn't tell us how well the companies are doing.
Oh, here is another comparison. Microsoft's earnings increased 9% year-over-year; Apple's increased 26% year-over-year. Well, at least that agrees with the market share of one company is decreasing and the other's is increasing.

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

8.1 Van,
Although I don't agree that Net Applications' methodology is the best way of determining market share; it is the one you have chosen. You have repeated the numbers: MacIntel OS X -- 6.51%, Vista -- 20.45% and the statment that Vista is growing at a faster rate than MacIntel.
I don't think anyone has disagreed with that - one can look at the trend lines and see that the slope, which is the rate of growth, is greater than the slope on the MacIntel trend line.
However, many are questioning does that have the significance you seem to imply. Looking again at the trend lines, one can also see that the slope for the XP trend line is more negative than the slope for Vista's trend line is positive; that is, XP's share of the market is falling at a faster rate than Vista is growing.
That leads to the numbers others have focused on, Windows' market share is decreasing and Mac's market share is increasing. What is the rate of change in market share? 18 months ago, Windows' market share was 21.5 times greater than Mac's market share. The November numbers show that Window's market share is now 10.1 times greater. Although I don't have inside infromation, I would imagine that Microsoft has taken note of that change.

RE: Decision - Dome or dish

One thing I've learned is that Direct tv sats are higher in the sky making it easier to get a signal.
I think that depends on where you are. As you move about the country, I believe the relative heights of the satellites will change. Your statement might be true where you are, but it may not hold true everywhere.
.
yes, one of the mods explained that a while back.
bumpy
All geostaionary satellites are above the equator. However, a person's location relative to such satellites makes them appear higher or lower in the sky. For most of the US, DirecTV's 101 will appear higher because it is south of central Texas. However, the 110 satellite is south of Arizona and the 119 satellite is south of California. In those regions, 110 and 119 will appear higher in the sky than 101.

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

Gee, it's getting hard to keep this thread open. Perhaps if I reinserted "religion" into the thread.
gestaton, your answer is the one that the majority of people "know" to be correct. After all, it is either a head or a tail. But, SCVJeff is close in his estimate that only 25% of the population would know the answer and why. At least my observations would put the number in that range.
Creeper gave the correct answer. The mathematical foundation for his answer being correct is Bayes Theorem for conditional probabilities. I think it best that we not go there.
Suppose that one coin is drawn from the box and place on a table and that we don't get to observe either side. What is the probablility that the side that is down is a head. Hopefully, we can agree that it is 3/4 - there are 4 sides all of which are just as likely to be down and 3 of the 4 are heads. Would seeing the side that is up help us judge what the down side is? Clearly it would if the face up side were a tail. We would know with certainty that the down side is a head. But what if the side that is up is a head?
Before continuing, I would like to label the sides of the coins: 1 is one side of coin with two heads, 2 is the other side of that coin, 3 is the head side of the "fair" coin, and 4 is the tail side of the "fair" coin.
So if we are seeing a head, then we are seeing either side 1, 2, or 3. Do we know which one? No, each is just as likely to be the side we are seeing. So there are 3 different ways we could see a head. What is the other side in each of those three cases?
If we see 1, then the other side is 2, a head.
If we see 2, then the other side is 1, a head.
If we see 3, then the other side is 4, a tail.
Two of the three possibilities has a head as the side we can't see.
OK, maybe I should have done Bayes Theorem. :B

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

dfb,
In my adult life, I've never assumed that my experiences are universal. When one makes a post that his views are the one and true reality, it convinces no one.
How does insulting people with statements like, "... it only means that most are not informed about another better system or they are afraid to try it" help to convince people that Macs are better? I am writing this on an 8-year old IBM ThinkPad. It has never had a virus or malware of any kind. It has never needed a repair. It has never had a blue screen of death. Yet, I don't think I'm uninforumed or afraid to try a Mac. In fact, I own more than one Mac. I have written commercial software for both platforms.
On this forum and other venues, I have stated my belief that those who have the means to use both Windows and OS X has an advantage over those that can use only one of them. If I'm correct, then a more telling arguement in favor of Macs is their abilty to run both operating systems.

RE: posting picture in my signature

What is the size of the picture you are trying to upload to your signature? Although not descriptive, most of the time, the error you are getting is because the picture exceeds one or more of the maximums.
For signatures:
Maximum width = 500 pixels
Maximum height = 100 pixels
Maximum file size = 30 KB

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

LittleBill,
It was St. Augustine's quote, not my own. My undergraduate work was in math and physics; my graduate work was in math. (From reading the post, one could tell by my spelling of 'condemnation' that spelling and/or typing were not my majors.)
gestanton,
Although I have a queasy feeling about probablility and sadistics ... make that statistics, my nausea does not come so much from the math, but rather from the lack of understanding and how people, not statiticians, misue them.
Here is an example of lack of understanding:
A box contains two coins. One coin is heads on both sides and the other is heads on one side and tails on the other. One coin is selected at random from the box and the face of one side of that coin is observed. If the observed face is heads, what is the probability the other side is heads?
How many people do you think know the answer to that question and why?

RE: Getting out of this MAC Stuff

Vista market share grew much faster than MacIntel OS and MacIntel OS share share is only 6.51% compared to Vista's 20.45%.
OS market share
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and confine man in the bonds of Hell. (St. Augustine)
Most certainly, St. Augustine included the black arts of statistics in his comdenation of mathematicians.
Using the same source as 8.1 Van, one can also see that, for the first time in memory, perhaps even in recorded history, Windows OS market share has fallen below 90%. One of these numbers would have everyone in Redmond smiling, while the other would have the opposite effect.

RE: how to post a picture

Pictures must be placed on a host site, before they can be inserted into a post. There are many different host sites.
Here is a tutorial that walks you through the steps of posting a picture, starting with placing the picture on a host site.
